The headquarters is not a local independent insurance agency, public claims counter, auto-repair facility, roadside dispatch office, medical-bill processing center, premium-payment lockbox, or universal destination for policy and claim documents.

The 1-517-323-1200 number is the corporate and administrative telephone number. Policyholders should generally begin with their servicing independent agent or the appropriate specialized number listed below.

Auto-Owners Corporate Phone Versus General Contact

Auto-Owners publishes different numbers for corporate administration, general inquiries, claims, payments, and emergency services:

The number 1-888-252-4626 is not general Customer Service. It is intended primarily for reporting a claim when the local independent agent is unavailable.

The number 1-800-288-8740 is the automated payment line for qualifying auto, home, and business policies. It is not the general corporate or claim number.

Auto-Owners Insurance Mailing Addresses

Corporate mailing address

Auto-Owners Insurance Company
P.O. Box 30660
Lansing, MI 48909-8160

This is a corporate mailing address. It should not automatically be used for premium payments, claim documents, medical bills, legal service, life-insurance forms, or documents intended for another Auto-Owners group company.

Corporate street address

Auto-Owners Insurance Company
6101 Anacapri Boulevard
Lansing, MI 48917

Before sending important correspondence, confirm the correct legal insurer and destination through the current policy, bill, claim correspondence, official form, or independent agent.

How Auto-Owners Insurance Uses Independent Agents

Auto-Owners distributes and services insurance through independent insurance agencies rather than relying primarily on a direct-to-consumer sales model.

The servicing independent agent should normally be the first contact for:

  • Insurance quotes
  • Coverage reviews
  • Adding or removing vehicles and drivers
  • Address changes
  • Billing questions
  • Renewal or nonrenewal questions
  • Premium increases
  • Policy cancellations
  • Insurance cards and policy documents
  • Reporting a new claim
  • Identifying an assigned claim representative

An independent agency may represent Auto-Owners and other insurance companies. The agency is separate from the Auto-Owners corporate headquarters, even though it is authorized to sell and service Auto-Owners policies.

Auto-Owners Insurance Ownership and Mutual Structure

Auto-Owners Insurance Company is a mutual insurance company. It is not publicly traded and does not have a stock-market ticker.

A mutual insurance company is operated for the long-term interests of eligible policyholder members rather than outside public shareholders.

Some companies within the Auto-Owners Insurance Group are stock insurers owned within the group. The legal company shown on a policy determines which insurer is responsible for the contract and claim.

Auto-Owners Insurance Group Companies

Core companies within the Auto-Owners Insurance Group include:

  • Auto-Owners Insurance Company: The group’s principal mutual property and casualty insurer
  • Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company: Life insurance, annuity, and disability-income products
  • Owners Insurance Company: Property and casualty insurer operating within much of the regional market
  • Home-Owners Insurance Company: Property and casualty insurer operating in selected states
  • Property-Owners Insurance Company: Property and casualty insurer operating in selected states
  • Southern-Owners Insurance Company: Property and casualty insurer operating in Florida

Other affiliated groups include:

  • Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company: Excess and surplus-lines insurance
  • Concord Group Insurance Companies: Insurance operations in northern New England
  • Capital Insurance Group: Insurance operations in selected western states

Customers should identify the exact legal company printed on the declarations page, insurance card, claim letter, premium notice, cancellation notice, or policy form.

The legal company name is important when:

  • Filing an insurance-department complaint
  • Sending a formal policy notice
  • Submitting a proof of loss
  • Disputing a cancellation or nonrenewal
  • Requesting regulatory assistance
  • Serving legal documents

Auto-Owners Leadership and Company Scale

  • Chairman and Chief Executive Officer: Jamie P. Whisnant

Auto-Owners reports serving nearly three million policyholders through approximately 48,000 licensed agents in 26 states.

The company reports more than 6.2 million policies in force and more than 6,100 associates. Storefront agencies, claims offices, affiliated insurers, and regional companies may use different addresses and contacts from the Lansing headquarters.

Auto-Owners Products and Services

Depending on the state, insurer, eligibility, and agency, Auto-Owners may offer:

  • Automobile insurance
  • Homeowners insurance
  • Condominium and renters insurance
  • Rental-property and mobile-home insurance
  • Farm insurance
  • Flood insurance
  • Umbrella insurance
  • Motorcycle, ATV, motor-home, RV, boat, and trailer insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Annuities
  • Disability-income insurance
  • Business insurance
  • Commercial automobile insurance
  • Workers’ compensation insurance
  • Surety bonds
  • Commercial umbrella insurance
  • Pet insurance and other specialty products

Product availability, underwriting company, terms, exclusions, discounts, limits, and rates vary by state and individual risk.

How to Report an Auto-Owners Claim

Auto-Owners instructs policyholders to contact the servicing independent agent first.

When the agent is unavailable, call:

Before reporting a claim, gather:

  • Policy number when available
  • Date, time, and location of the event
  • Description of what happened
  • Names and contact details for the people involved
  • Other insurance information
  • Police, fire, or incident-report number
  • Photographs or videos
  • Information about injuries or property damage
  • Emergency-repair, towing, or temporary-expense records

How to Track an Existing Claim

Policyholders with online access may review supported open claims and identify the assigned claim representative.

Customers without online access should contact the independent agent for the claim representative’s current telephone number and email address.

Third parties involved in an incident with an Auto-Owners policyholder may use the public claim-tracking route when available.

Keep a record of:

  • Claim number
  • Assigned claim representative
  • Direct telephone number and email
  • Dates and times of contacts
  • Documents requested and submitted
  • Estimates, invoices, and payments
  • Outstanding questions
  • The specific resolution requested

Auto-Owners Automobile Claims

After an automobile accident:

  1. Move to safety when possible.
  2. Call emergency services when injuries, danger, or legally required reporting are involved.
  3. Exchange driver, vehicle, and insurance information.
  4. Photograph the vehicles, road, traffic controls, and visible damage.
  5. Obtain witness information.
  6. Obtain the police or incident-report number.
  7. Contact the independent agent or after-hours claim service.
  8. Keep towing, storage, rental, repair, medical, and transportation records.

Do not sign a release or repair authorization that you do not understand. Do not admit legal liability at the scene, but provide accurate factual information to police and the insurers involved.

Auto-Owners Property Claims

For a homeowners, renters, farm, landlord, or business-property loss:

  • Protect people from immediate danger.
  • Contact emergency services when appropriate.
  • Take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage.
  • Photograph the condition before permanent repairs.
  • Keep damaged property when safe and practical.
  • Save temporary-repair and additional-living-expense receipts.
  • Prepare an inventory of damaged or missing items.
  • Ask the claim representative before discarding major evidence.

A denial based on groundwater, flooding, seepage, wear, deterioration, mold, maintenance, or another exclusion may depend on the precise source and cause of loss, policy language, endorsements, inspections, and applicable state law.

Request the claim decision and policy provisions in writing when coverage is denied or limited.

Water, Flood, Mold, and Groundwater Claims

Different water-related losses may be treated differently under a property policy. Examples include:

  • Sudden plumbing discharge
  • Roof or storm damage
  • Sewer or drain backup
  • Surface water
  • Groundwater
  • Foundation seepage
  • Long-term leakage
  • Flooding
  • Mold resulting from a covered or excluded event

For a disputed water-loss claim:

  1. Ask for the complete written coverage decision.
  2. Request the policy provisions and exclusions relied upon.
  3. Preserve photographs, videos, damaged materials, plumber reports, remediation reports, and weather information.
  4. Document temporary repairs and mitigation expenses.
  5. Ask whether an engineer, plumber, adjuster, or other specialist inspected the cause.
  6. Request supervisory review when factual information was overlooked.
  7. Preserve appraisal, proof-of-loss, lawsuit, and regulatory deadlines.

Flood insurance is generally separate from an ordinary homeowners policy. When the independent agent is unavailable, qualifying flood claims may be reported at 1-800-233-1131.

Auto-Owners Glass and Windshield Claims

Auto-Owners uses Quest Claims Service and Safelite Solutions for qualifying glass claims. Policyholders may generally select the repair shop, subject to policy terms and the company’s claim process.

Before authorizing replacement:

  • Confirm that glass coverage applies.
  • Ask whether a deductible is due.
  • Confirm whether repair is possible instead of replacement.
  • Ask about calibration of safety and driver-assistance systems.
  • Keep the invoice and warranty information.

Auto-Owners Road Trouble Service

The representative will verify whether the policy includes the applicable coverage and assist with locating a service provider.

Depending on the policy, assistance may include:

  • Towing
  • Battery jump-start
  • Flat-tire assistance
  • Vehicle lockout assistance
  • Fuel or essential-fluid delivery
  • Minor roadside mechanical assistance

Call emergency services first when a vehicle is in a dangerous traffic location, someone is injured, a fire is involved, or another immediate hazard exists.

Auto-Owners Workers’ Compensation Claims

The Injury Hotline provides access to medical professionals for workplace-injury triage and recommendations. It is not a replacement for emergency services.

After a workplace injury:

  1. Call emergency services for a potentially life-threatening condition.
  2. Notify the employer or supervisor promptly.
  3. Use the Injury Hotline when included in the employer’s program.
  4. Contact the employer’s independent insurance agent.
  5. Obtain the workers’ compensation claim number.
  6. Confirm treatment, network, pharmacy, and authorization instructions.
  7. Keep work-status notes, medical records, mileage records, and receipts.

Workers’ compensation rules differ by state. Employees, employers, and providers should follow the state-specific claim and medical-billing instructions.

Auto-Owners Billing and Payment Numbers

Auto-Owners advises policyholders to contact the local independent agent with billing questions.

Do not send credit-card, bank-account, or payment information through the general website email form.

Auto-Owners Payment Mailing Address

The current official payment address published for Auto-Owners Insurance Company is:

Auto-Owners Insurance Company
P.O. Box 740312
Cincinnati, OH 45274-0312

Use the payment coupon and address printed on the current bill when it differs. Another group company, life-insurance product, mortgage arrangement, or policy system may use another address.

Before mailing a premium:

  • Include the required coupon.
  • Identify the policy or billing account as instructed.
  • Do not mail cash.
  • Keep proof of mailing and payment.
  • Confirm that the payment posted before the due date or grace period expires.

Premium Increase, Renewal, and Nonrenewal Questions

A premium increase or underwriting change may involve:

  • Statewide rate changes
  • Vehicle or property characteristics
  • Driving or claim history
  • Construction and repair costs
  • Catastrophe exposure
  • Inflation
  • Credit-based insurance information where permitted
  • Discount changes
  • Coverage or deductible changes
  • Updated underwriting guidelines

Ask the independent agent for:

  • A current declarations page
  • An explanation of the change
  • Discounts added or removed
  • Changes in coverage or deductibles
  • The effective date
  • The stated reason for a nonrenewal
  • Available coverage alternatives

How to Cancel an Auto-Owners Policy

Auto-Owners policies are normally serviced through the independent agency that wrote the coverage.

  1. Contact the servicing independent agent.
  2. Identify the exact policy to be canceled.
  3. Request the desired cancellation date.
  4. Ask whether a signed written request is required.
  5. Confirm whether a premium balance or refund remains.
  6. Request written confirmation of the effective cancellation date.
  7. Check later statements for drafts, credits, or outstanding balances.

Do not rely solely on removing an automatic payment or blocking a bank draft. That action may not cancel the insurance contract.

Do not cancel required auto, home, business, farm, life, or other insurance before replacement coverage is effective when continuous coverage is needed.

How to Escalate an Auto-Owners Claim Complaint

  1. Contact the assigned claim representative: Identify the claim number, disputed issue, and requested resolution.
  2. Request a written explanation: Ask for the policy language, estimate, valuation, exclusion, or evidence supporting the decision.
  3. Request supervisory review: Ask for the claim supervisor, branch manager, or other appropriate manager.
  4. Contact the servicing independent agent: The agent may assist with communication and policy identification but may not control the claim decision.
  5. Use the general company number: Call 1-800-346-0346 when the assigned contacts cannot be reached.
  6. Prepare a factual written timeline: Include dates, documents, prior responses, and the specific action requested.
  7. Preserve deadlines: An internal complaint does not necessarily extend proof-of-loss, appraisal, appeal, lawsuit, or regulatory deadlines.
  8. Contact the appropriate state insurance regulator: Use the state with jurisdiction over the policy and legal insurer.

The Lansing corporate office may refer a claim complaint to the local claims branch responsible for the loss.

How to File an Outside Insurance Complaint

Insurance complaints are generally handled by the insurance department in the state where the policy was issued or where the transaction and insurer are regulated.

Before filing:

  • Identify the full legal underwriting-company name.
  • Gather the policy and declarations page.
  • Keep claim decisions, estimates, inspection reports, photographs, payment records, and correspondence.
  • Create a factual timeline.
  • Request a final written company response.
  • Explain the exact resolution requested.

A regulator may review whether the insurer and agent followed applicable insurance law and policy procedures. The regulator does not act as the customer’s private attorney and may not resolve every disputed fact or award every requested payment.

Auto-Owners Privacy Requests

The privacy route may assist with privacy questions and applicable data-access, correction, deletion, or other privacy-rights requests.

The privacy department does not report or adjust claims, change insurance coverage, issue premium refunds, make payments, cancel policies, or dispatch roadside service.

Submit identity-verification information only through the secure process supplied by Auto-Owners.

Auto-Owners Insurance Fraud Reporting

Fraud reporting is intended for suspected intentional insurance fraud or theft. It is not the correct route for an ordinary coverage disagreement, premium complaint, delayed callback, or dissatisfaction with a settlement offer.

Provide factual information and avoid unsupported accusations about identifiable people.

Auto-Owners Careers and Human Resources

Auto-Owners does not publish the corporate or general-contact number as a dedicated public Human Resources line.

Career areas may include:

  • Claims
  • Underwriting
  • Actuarial work
  • Information technology
  • Accounting and finance
  • Investments
  • Legal and compliance
  • Marketing and agency relations
  • Human Resources
  • Customer and policy services

Applicants should follow the contact instructions in the official job posting. Current associates should use established manager, Human Resources, payroll, benefits, leave, ethics, safety, or employee-relations channels.

Do not publish Social Security numbers, employee IDs, tax forms, medical records, wage information, background checks, private manager details, or confidential employment correspondence.

Auto-Owners Reader Complaint and Review Theme

The visible reader submission on this page describes an alleged property-claim dispute involving flooring removed during an investigation, alleged continuing property and mold concerns, dissatisfaction with communication and inspection, and a denial reportedly based on groundwater.

This is one individual, unverified reader account. It does not establish:

  • The actual cause of the loss
  • The property’s condition
  • Whether mold was professionally confirmed
  • The policy provisions that applied
  • The complete claim investigation
  • Whether the agent or adjuster followed every required procedure
  • A companywide pattern

A useful claim review should identify the policy type, state, general date of loss, claim category, internal escalation attempted, written reason given, and whether the issue was resolved. It should not publish the commenter’s age, income, home address, claim number, private employee names, medical information, or unsupported accusations.

Auto Owners Insurance Disappointing

February 7, 2025

Auto Owners Insurance, Left a mess!! Thu, Feb 6 at 9:27 PM. I guess you’re going to close my claim. This leaves me with a duct taped (holding the planks down) floor. I am very unsteady when walking and use a walker. I am not happy with Auto Owners and figure they under insured me. I am on a fixed income and followed every one of your instructions. You never took time to visit my home, you just left me in a mess, which I don’t appreciate. I will let the State know how Auto Owners has treated an 82-yr old, widowed woman; me !!! I’ve been with this company for many, many years, the way you are treating me is really upsetting me. The agent said I had to have my flooring taken up in order to find where the water was coming from, At My Expense. the flooring was taken up, the bad flooring is on the other side of my bathroom and is moving to the center of my small home. I have black mold and a very soft floor. My claim was denied do to “ground water.” I joined Auto Owners in 1979. I am very mad right now.
