How to Escalate a Goodwill Complaint

Start with the local Goodwill store, donation center, outlet, or regional Goodwill headquarters connected to the issue. Goodwill stores and donation centers are usually operated by local Goodwill organizations, so a complaint about a specific location is often handled locally.

If the local store does not respond, look up the local Goodwill organization’s headquarters, contact form, or customer-service page. Include the store location, visit date, receipt or donation details, and a clear description of what happened.

If the issue involves Goodwill Industries International itself, national programs, media, partnerships, legal correspondence, website issues, or general organization questions, contact Goodwill Industries International at 15810 Indianola Drive, Rockville, MD 20855.

Donation, Receipt, and Pickup Guidance

Donation policies can vary by local Goodwill organization. Before donating furniture, electronics, mattresses, large items, fragile items, or specialty goods, check the local Goodwill website or call the donation center. Some locations may accept items that other locations do not, and some donation centers may have different hours than nearby retail stores.

If you need a donation receipt, ask for it at the time of donation. Keep the receipt with your tax records and add your own itemized list or photos when appropriate. Goodwill locations generally do not assign tax values for donors, so donors are responsible for keeping their own records.

Store Pricing, Discounts, Returns, and Local Policy Guidance

Many Goodwill complaints involve prices, discount programs, color-tag sales, senior discounts, bag policies, return rules, store organization, outlet bins, and item condition. These policies can vary by local Goodwill organization and sometimes by store format.

Before escalating, ask the local store manager for the written policy or local headquarters contact. If the issue involves a change in discounts, prices, return rules, or store conditions, include the specific store location and date of the visit.

ShopGoodwill.com and Online Shopping Guidance

ShopGoodwill.com is an online marketplace where participating Goodwill organizations list items for sale. Online purchase issues may involve a specific seller location, shipping charge, pickup schedule, item description, damage, payment, auction timing, or account access.

For ShopGoodwill.com issues, use the customer-service tools inside your ShopGoodwill account and include the item number, order number, seller location, photos, tracking information, and messages connected to the transaction.

About Goodwill Industries International

Goodwill Industries International is a nonprofit organization that supports a network of local Goodwill organizations. Goodwill’s model uses donated goods, thrift stores, online shopping, career services, training programs, and community partnerships to support employment and opportunity programs.

Goodwill’s national brand is widely recognized, but many day-to-day store, donation, pricing, and program decisions are handled by local Goodwill organizations. For that reason, a local Goodwill headquarters is often more useful than the national headquarters for store-specific complaints.

Goodwill Phoenix AZ Disappointing Experience

May 14, 2025

Goodwill, Extremely Unprofessional Behavior from Store Manager. If I could give zero stars, I would. I’m very disappointed in my recent experience. The store was dirty, disorganized, and the bathrooms were in poor condition. During my visit, I asked an employee to unlock the restroom for me. After using the restroom, a woman claiming to be the manager confronted me aggressively, shouting in my face and demanding to know who gave me access. When I declined to name the employee, she escalated the situation—yelling and ultimately telling me I was banned from returning to the store. I was shocked and embarrassed by how unprofessionally she handled the situation. No customer deserves to be treated this way, and her behavior was completely inappropriate, especially in front of others. It’s unfortunate to see employees treated so poorly and a store managed with so little care or respect. This occurred at the Dunlap & I-17 location in Phoenix, AZ. I sincerely hope Goodwill addresses the leadership at this store and takes steps to improve both staff conduct and store conditions.

Goodwill Disappointing Shopping Issues

March 22, 2025

Goodwill, Prices are too high. First you stop supplying bags. I need to bring my own. Then you stop colored tag discounts and then you cancel Senior day. Now the prices are too high. I will no longer drop off items I no longer need. I will throw them away rather then give them to your company!

Goodwill Disorganized Stores Issues

March 22, 2025

Goodwill, I’ve been shopping at Goodwill longer than I can remember. I’ve donated A Lot as well. The prices gave gotten ridiculous to say the least. I can shop on FB Marketplace cheaper. But that’s not why I’m writing. I follow people on FB and Instagram shopping at Goodwill stores across the US. They are always very clean and organized. However, the store in League City, Texas at Victory Lakes is a disaster. As well as the one in Webster, Texas off of NASA and Gulf Freeway. No organization and the items on top of the clothing racks are impossible to look through. I’m tall but I see short people unable to shop. The same in Alvin, Texas off of 35. The store at Bay Area and Space Center in the same area (Houston) has remodeled and gotten shoe racks and shelving for the knick knacks and dishes. So why are so many of the others not doing the same? I think it’s terrible to receive Free merchandise, charge the ridiculous prices now ( Google Lens should not be used at a thrift store to price) and have to dig through piles of messes on top of clothing racks. I’m hearing more and more dissatisfied customers. I suggest if you’re going to charge antique store prices to clean up the mess.

Goodwill DIsappointing Experience

March 20, 2025

Goodwill Outlet store, I had a disappointing experience at the Sioux City location with an employee who acted in an extremely disrespectful and unprofessional manner. On multiple occasions, she has taken my items and dumped them out without explanation. She also followed closely behind me while I was shopping, making me feel uncomfortable. My boss even witnessed this behavior and asked her why she was acting that way, but she responded dismissively, saying she didn’t need to explain herself. This has happened to me twice now, and I’ve reached out to corporate to address the issue, but I have yet to receive a response. I feel this employee’s behavior is completely unacceptable and does not reflect well on the Goodwill name. I hope this situation is investigated and handled appropriately.
