  1. You probably don't care but I'm leaving my opinion anyway. Your hotel in Missoula mt is the worst most filthy bug infested rat hole I've ever entered. Within minutes after entering our 116 dollar a night room we were blasted with the fragrance of cigarette smoke that permitted the carpets, draperies and of course the linens. My daughter found four dead bugs on the bathroom floor. The counter tops were dirty and the beds were saggy in the middle. You really need to review your hotels. No wonder your chain of hotels is diminishIng. This was one filthy dirty slimy establishment! Shame on you!

    1. I had the same worst experience. The bad odor of smoke, dust, etc., hit us in the face when we entered the room. The rug was dirty. But we were tired after a long drive and wanted to rest....but found feces splattered behind the toilet. I called the front desk to ask for a clean room. A maintenance man (wearing a wife beater t-shirt with tattoo's galore, shaved head) came to look at the bathroom. Since it was already cleaned up, he said that we couldn't prove that it was there, that maybe we did it. I felt very intimidated by his stance and stare down. The sheets had an old/dirty smell to them, one of the pillow cases had old blood stains on it, and the blankets were torn. We were declined a clean room. After trying to sleep, I realized I was going to be able to. I told my child to pack up, we're getting out of here. I asked the desk clerk for a refund. He said I would have to talk to the manager, who wouldn't be available until the next day. I politely left my key cards on the front desk, took the business card for the manager, and LEFT. While talking to the front desk clerk, the maintenance man with the wife beater t-shirt, stood behind in the background, with his arms crossed the entire time. I felt very intimidated by this and didn't dare look at him. I was so upset to say the very least. I don't know if this has anything to do with how I was treated at this hotel but I am Native American and have been told later that there are racist people in this area. Please look into this establishment, it is RUINING the name of "Howard Johnson".

    2. I'm just checking out of thr Howard and Johnson that's in Lansing Illinois, "Stay away, I repeat stay away". I just had the worst eexperience ever. I woke up around 7am because I've a business meeting at 9am downtown Chicago so I went into the bathroom to take a shower like always I put shampoo in my hair before I got in the shower. So I turn on the water and let it ran awhile only to find out that it was frozen cold, so I attempted to call down to the front desk and the phone was dead but my tv and heat was on. That didn't make sense. Now my hair is covered in shampoo and I'm headed downstairs to the front desk to complain. The moment I made it to the front desk it was five other guest that beat me to the punch. So I made it up to the counter and at the very momentI oopen my mouth the gentlemen who was claiming to be the GM (Adam) said that it was mother nature fault. So at this point I'm furious and demanded to get a number for corporate, only to find out from Adam that they're independently owned and that Howard and Johnson corporate office had nothing to do with them. So the number he gave me and I called was a number to someone who take my name and number and said someone will get in touch with me on March the 23th and today's date is March 12th and I'm standing inthe lobby with shampoo in my hair........

  2. I had the same experience in Clearwater, Florida. ADDRESS 27988 us Highway 19 N. Clearwater, Florida Manager/Owner Manager VERY RUDE, We ask for a NON-Smoking room. The room was smokey so we ask to be moved because my 3 year old grandson has seizures and can't do the smoke. The Manger/Owner and her husband told us they would show us another room, and if we didn't like the second room we could leave but not to wait two hours to tell them. After a few minutes my grandson was feeling ill do to the smoke in this room, so we decided to check out. I book my room with a credit card but when I arrived i paid in cash, I went back to the office after the second room, and told them we wanted to check out. I was chased through the parking lot by the husband shouting profanity. I was given my money back but they would not give me a receipt. When I went to use my credit card a few minutes later I discovered they charged my room for two nights. I called them immediately and was told I was a pain and they would not call my bank my bank had to release the cc . My bank is Wells Fargo and said their policy is for the merchant to call them. I then called the hotel back and they screamed at me and told they weren't calling anyone. I have been trying since Saturday night to call Customer Service Corporate headquarters to get this resolved and as of this point have had not luck.

  3. This is the first of what will be a lot of complaints I am going to file on the treatment I received and will be publishing all across the web. I am not going to stand for how the Collins Ave in Miami FL manager and front desk staff spoke to me and then canceled my prepaid reservation! How dare they copy my credit card after they ran it and it was approved! That is ILLEGAL!! You are running a scam out of there and it involves identity theft! NO MERCHANT is permitted to copy front and back of a card without the cardholder authorizing it. Then to cancel my room that was paid for and make me spend 300% more is going to cost you dearly! I am going to spend the money on press releases telling everyone what a bunch of thieves you are and you are harboring! NO hotel chain is immune from this type of theft and I demand a refund with the costs for the other room covered as well. You staff is supposed to be trained and courtesy should be the priority. Instead I was spoken too like crap when I demanded the copy of my card! THIS in and of itself is insane! Your staff screwed up my business trip and cost my company over $500 more than I wanted to spend. For this I promise to spend the same amount on press releases to tell the world what a SCAM HOWARD JOHNSON'S is running in its hotels!

  4. Stayed at the Howard Johnson in Billings, rented the EXPENSIVE Suite and the Hide-a-bed was broke!! I called down to the front desk and we was informed that it was extremely busy and that there wasn't a key to get us a roll away bed. We also asked for extra blankets. We didn't receive anything!! One person had to sleep on the couch and the other on the floor and they froze because we never received the extra blanket!! I went to the front desk 3 times that next morning and was told management was on there way, I left my cell # and no one called me!! I called again that night and was told i had to talk with owner. I called the next day and owner wasn't in, I have left 2 voice mails and haven't heard from anyone. I WILL NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN@@@@@@@

  6. We booked a room at the Howard Johnson in Edmonton Alberta Canada, we got there and after 1 and a half hours they still had not given us our room, now 4:30 in the afternoon, so we said another room would be fine, but the room they gave us was filthy, the staff had no idea what they were doing, we could smell bug spray throughout the place, this is unheard of. We left without spending the two nights, still have to get our money back. The front desk clerk gave us back the deposit we had paid on top of the room, they had our credit card, then the front desk clerk said, the manager doesn't check the rooms, he shouldn't have to if it were done right. I will never ever stay at a howard johnson again.

  7. Howard Johnson Norco is the worst I have ever stated in. The Indian management have limited customer service training, run it like a ghetto motel ,they do not know the legal rights of guests. They call police even when they are paid, find excuses to throw guests out for the fun of it with help of the sheriff!
Non smoking rooms are rented out as smoking rooms. Drug dealers and prositutes form their client base.
Avoid the hotel if you can.
    Find another hotel in Norco

  9. Having been given the diagnosis of cancer with seven weeks treatment and having to be 180 miles from home, the Howard Johnson in Rapid City, SD was a Godsend to us. Not only did the manager Michelle Aufdengarten give us an excellent medical discount, but the staff was warm and friendly and very accommodating to our needs. Our room and the facility itself was clean and pleasant and I would highly recommend it as the place to stay!

  10. We recently stayed at the Howard Johnson San Antonio Downtown, 1122 S. Laredo ST. I told the guy who was at the desk when we checked in that I had went threw hotels.com. He said he didn't like people doing that it was a hasle on his part. We requested two non smoking rooms beside each other with ice box and microwave. He done the paper work and we go to our room and they were beside each other but mine was a smoking. Ashtray on table. I didn't say anything about that I had rather have the ice box and microwave which wasn't there. So when I called I was to you have to request that when you make the reservations. I said I did. I was told well not every room can have those. He finally brings me one. The ice box freezer has a green spot in it that looks like mold. I have a picture of it. The other room had no ice bucket, was told by the guy that they were out of some things. But he went to the back and got me one. I told him the room had no phone, he said we can't help what people steal out of the rooms. 1 room had 1 person and the other had 4. Both room s had one roll of toilet paper and two towels. Neither romote for the tvs worked in either room. They changed one of them out three times. The next day we went to look around San Antonio and we come back to our rooms, neither one of our keys would let us in our rooms. Had to go to office and get new keys. Wednesday went to Sea World. When we come back same thing had to go to the office to get new keys. There was a lady up there that time. I told her this is my first stay at a Howard Johnson and my last stay at a Howard Johnson. She redone our keys so we could get back into our rooms. Had to get a roll of toilet paper for the one room that housekeeping cleaned that day and left towels on beds and didn't make beds, didn't empty trash, or leave a roll of toilet paper in bath room. The night before we left the light in the swimming pool come out of its socket and was in the pool. I have stayed in some run down hotels and motels before but this was my worst experience ever. I was told when I made the reservations that this hotel had just been built, that it was new.

Recently stayed at a Howard Johnson in Niagara Falls , cananda, are the times really that difficult to put cleanliness and professionalism last in your Hotels. I could write to add some more to the list of shame but why even bother , you don't seem to care anyways or your Hotels would be in a better shape. But I will make sure to contact BBB and AAA (which should not even list your hotel in canada with any stars). Took the time to take some pictures too. And trust me I will tell anyone that will listen... I hope you are able to change or you will go under like so many other businesses that carry the stigma of a good name with nothing behind it. SHAME on you!

  12. I have always had in the past, stayed at Howard Johnsons. I had made a reservation on line for my husband July 2013 down in San Diego. He is working at a location to far from home to drive back. Not from that area, I'm not sure of what to expect. However, Howard Johnsons was always known for clean rooms comfortable and safe locations, with plenty amenities to please even the most persnickity traveler.
So, I booked online a room for two days and nights. My husband told me if it was reasonable priced he would plan on staying at that location until he was done with a two month job.
I wished I was in formed of the location. It was in El Cajon on El Cajon Blvd. When my husband arrived there. He was so mad and upset what transpired. Little did we know. The hotel was in the middle of a seedy area (getto) of ElCajon (SanDiego).
Not only did he not feel safe, He was approched buy two Hookers and One Crack Dealer.
And, this happened all before he got to the front door of Howard Johnsons. My Husband was really upset. Also they were remodeling and had beds out in the quad areas.
My husband had just got off working an 8 hour shift, plus he drove from Big Bear at 1:30 am to San Diego to start at 7:00am to star this day. So he was in no mood to deal with this outrage.
The Hotel never warned us that they were remodeling. So we could choose to reasses the situation ahead of time. And you could not understand the front desk clerk. His accent was very and diction was very sloppy. He did not accentuate his words clearly.
Tired , Hungry and worn out, my husband wanted to cancel this fiasco and go elsewhere. They wanted $15.00 to cancel his reservation.
What Nerve! That was unexceptable. Under those conditions. And the scuzzy area they where located..
I want to WARN anyone going to SanDiego/ ElCajon area!!!! DO NOT STAY AT HOWARD JOHNSONS ON EL CAJON BLVD! IT IS HORRIBLE! Go anywhere ! But Don't Go there.... Very upset and will never stay at a HOWARD JOHNSONS INN ....EVER!

  13. Howard Johnson in Pensacola, Fl is a total scam. I recently booked and stayed at the location on Pensacola Blvd. I made reservations using my cc, but paid cash upon my check-in. Just got my cc statement and my card was charged for my stay. So for Jocelyn the desk clerk, I hope you spent my cash on something well needed. This issue will be further dealt with, as I will not be double charged.

  14. Just to add to the long list of complaints...My family stayed at the HJ in Burlington, IA. We used our cc to reserve the room and paid cash as well once arriving. Our room smelled really bad like years and years of dirt and stains on the floor not to mention our two chairs that we had to sit on had at least 5 stains in one and filth and dirt in the other one. One roll of toilet paper for our 3 night stay. Called for extra blankets the front desk clerk said she was busy and so i looked through my broken window in our room through the pool area and saw not a sole standing at the desk. I have worked in a hotel for a few years and I was always taught guest come first. I had to ask for our towels eache day and toilet paper. Our beds were made one time while we were there. We will never stay at the HJ again.

We had to ask for clean sheets. The bedding all should of been thrown out! None of us were willing to even shower there.I took pictures of this place. How on earth is this place still open ?Don't hotels have to pass inspections? This place should have been torn down years ago! We ask to talk to the manager to get our money back or at least a discount and received nothing. The people who work there even think its a dump! Peeling paint in huge chunks hanging from the ceilings.Stained drapes, carpet, bedding and furniture!

  16. I stayed at Howard Johnson's in Bakersfield on White Lane on July 27th. They had my credit card information, but I had to surrender my driver's license of which they made a copy of both the license and credit card. I was not in favor of that as anyone with that copy of my license may have opened up a bank account, applied for a credit card and done extensive damage to my finances. I was very willing to show my information, but I did not like a copy laying around that office. I also asked for that copy back when I checked out, but was denied that copy. Had I known, I would not have stayed there. There is no reason to copy sensitive information of a guest. I also had roaches in the room. All I got from the staff was i'm sorry. That don't cut it for me. I have stayed at several locations that were clean, thrifty, and a pleasure to stay at. I don't know why this location was so bad.

  18. It's sad that people have to write bad comments on-line. I am 51 years old and have been staying in HOJO'S for at least 35 years, I recently stayed in HOJO'S lundy's lane Niagara Falls Canada. The WORST place in the world.Very very very DIRTY. cut my leg on the bed. Rug was awful walls dirty I was afraid I was going to catch something. What is really SAD is this being a big hotel chain. They never offered to return the 280 dollars we spent never called to apologize for the WORST hotel stay in my life. They will not send anyone from corporate to go and see room 161 and the way the hotel name is being draged threw the mud. You now have your name made after all these years so you don't care. Room smelled like pot then musty when pot smell left. I have a small dog and he would not sleep on the floor so what does that tell you. HOJO'S should really check this out. So get off your high horses and check your hotels out before it's to late., because I don't care if they give it to me for $5 a night I will not return untill something is done.

  19. I would like to add my complaint to the list of complaints about Howard Johnson in general and Howard Johnson in Chicago Illinois. This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my life. The room was disgusting and my personal belongings came up missing from my room. I complained to management and they were rude and did absolutely nothing. I complained to the corporate office and was told that there was nothing they could do about the situation. I have never seen such terrible customer service in my life. I will never give Howard Johnson my business and will be sure to share my experience with anyone that will listen!!

I stayed at your Hotel on 9/1/13(Eggharbor township in NJ) and could not wait until the next day to leave I have never stayed in is such a dirty place in my life, this was the worst hotel, the carpet was dirty, the bed was lumpy, the chair and wall had stains, the iron board had stain no one dusted JUST NASTY, when I check out on 9/2/13 I told the manager at that desk how nasty the room was and all he said was. “ were working on to make things better inside”, I told him I see the outside of the hotel is more kept up then the inside and I think the time spent making the outside look good you should do the same for the inside, The Howard Johnson has been around toooooooooooooo long to look like it looks inside, I will never visit you hotel again.

  21. About two months ago we had breakfast at Hojos in Niagra falls ny, When we were seated at the booth I sat down and never seeing a hole in the seat which ripped my jeans luckily not my skin. A spring was sticking out. The jeans were pretty new and belonged to my daughter who had passed away. They have very sentimental meaning to me and now they are ruined. I lost 100 lbs just to fit into them. I cried when it happened. We told the waitress and she said she would get the manager right over which he never came. We ate our breakfast which was very good. The waitress never brought him over so when we were paying for our food we asked to speak to him and he just took my name and address and said he would let corp know. I have never heard anything not even an apology. I am very upset over this.

We stayed at the Howard Johnson Hotel at 1661 S. Hotel Circle in San Diego, Ca. We were charged for one room one night $147.00 plus tax. When we entered our room the first thing I saw was a large cup of soda from a local fast food, we are nonsmokers and the odor of tobacco was strong, the carpet was dirty, when we went to use the bathroom we found that the paper holder was broken and rusty like it had not been cleaned in months. There were no sanitary strips around the toilet seat to show that it had been cleaned. When I went to take my shower I found a bar of bath soap that was unwrapped and used on the counter. The handle to turn the on in the shower/bath was so hard to open that my wife could not work it. We had just got there from a long drive and my wife needed to use a bathroom and she asked the young man at the count if she could use the one in the lobby and was told they did not have one, everyone else does. We were tired and needed a place to stay and sleep and we did, the breakfast sure had a lot to be desired. I can promise you this that we will never ever be so desperate to stay a an HJ again.

Three days later I checked my credit card and they took the entire amount of my room from my account. There were no damages to the room whatsoever. When I called the hotel to ask for my money back the women who answered the phone (Katie) was very indignant, rude, and discourteous. As I was trying to exlpain the situation she told me to "shut up". I wasn't rude with her until that point. I am currently trying to get my money back from corporate. I can definately say if they refure me a refund I will be filing a civil suit.

But I guess that's what you get from people who don't care.... I wanted to check out after the first night but was told I would not get a refund.
You need to take more action on places like this.

  27. To all of you who have had the same horrible experience with Howard Johnson I say this, initiate a chargeback. Call your bank and tell them you want to initiate a chargeback for the fees you have been charged. This does 2 things. It challenges the fees directly with the credit card companies, Visa/MasterCard/Discover, ect. And it files a complaint against the company. All you have to do is show that your are owed the refund and that you have attempted, with negative results, to get a refund directly from the company. Visa (or whichever) will give you your money back then they will get the money back from Howard Johnson. Once you have won your claim and gotten your money back it is a black market against Howard Johnson with Visa/MasterCard. Once they have received enough black marks the credit card companies will stop dealing with them. Howard Johnson will no longer be able to process credit cards as a form of payment. I have done this twice with 2 different companies and I have gotten my money back both times. My stay at the Howard Johnson in Norco, CA was horrible. Among the various things wrong with the room, the shower did not put out hot water. When I called to complain they were all too happy to allow me to check out, WITHOUT A REFUND. When I threatened to check out and then initiate the chargeback they actually made an effort to correct something. Now lets see how long it takes them to remove this post!

I am aware and was present when a 95-year old man fell in the bathroom on the floor due to water being on the floor. The hotel's response was there was no water on the floor but funny when he got up there was water all over his clothes. The manager was not present and front desk clerk was not helpful at all, When I spoke to the manager his only response was that of defense out of fear that I would sue.!!! Please don't go here.

The front desk manager acted like we were a nuisance, like we were interrupting his personal time. There was no elevator so we had to carry all our bags up to the 2nd floor. When we got to our rooms (we had 2) we were totally disgusted. It was filthy!!! Literally there were boogers smeared on the wall, pubic hairs in the tub and on the floor of the bathroom, the smell was awful. We literally considered sleeping in our car. Both rooms were equally bad. We checked our beds for bed bugs before we got in and the next morning we showered in flip flops because it was so filthy we didn't want to get some disease. My mom couldn't sleep so she went to the lobby and there was literally prostitute after prostitute coming and going all night long. We got out of there first thing in the morning opting out of the continental breakfast because we wouldn't have dared eat it when everything else was so filthy. When we expressed our complaints to the front desk they offered no solution. I would never stay at this motel again, nor would I recommend a Super 8 motel to anyone that I knew!!!!! This is the first time I have ever left a review, but our experience was so bad I wanted to warn other people!!!!

  34. Howard Johnson in Perry GA. Unsafe, Unhealthy and terribly managed. Billy the general manager was angry and rude to old people and children. I was there half a day and witnessed it three times. Once and check in and twice at breakfast.

  35. My family and i JUST got thrown out of the Howard Johnson's diner in Flagstaff, AZ. Why? When we walked in, my brother who was having low sugar issues sat down with his back to walk and their cafe/diner manager started yell at us " I'm going to call the police and that paramedics! You need to get out!"
That asshole didn't even know what was going on, my brother end up walking out side bc the guy scared him (my brother has aspergers too, verbally assulting him like that was not just uncalled for it was fucked up) and then the guy told me and mom to get out too. I hope your company realizes that that was ableist, which can land you in serious legal trouble! Not to mention it could be construed as racist judging that we're a family of color to boot. I don't know what his problem was, but his behavior was unacceptable on all accounts. We fully intend to give both their local office and corporate office a call.
