Jewel-Osco: A Brief Overview

Jewel-Osco, a prominent supermarket chain in the American Midwest, originated in 1899 in Chicago, Illinois, starting as a door-to-door coffee delivery service and evolving into a full-fledged grocery and pharmacy chain. Known for its quality products, including fresh produce, meats, and bakery items, Jewel-Osco has grown to operate over 180 stores across Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. The brand is recognized for its dedication to customer service and community engagement, offering a comprehensive shopping experience. A significant development in its history was becoming a subsidiary of Albertsons Companies, Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States. This acquisition, part of Albertsons’ purchase of American Stores in 1999, has enabled Jewel-Osco to leverage the resources and scale of a larger parent company while maintaining its unique brand identity and strong presence in the Midwest.

Competition in the Grocery Sector

In the competitive grocery market, Jewel-Osco faces stiff competition from both regional and national players. Chains like Mariano’s, also based in the Midwest, offer a similar range of products with an emphasis on freshness and quality. National giants such as Walmart and Kroger also pose significant competition with their vast network of stores, competitive pricing, and extensive product ranges. Additionally, specialty stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, known for their organic and unique offerings, attract a niche segment of health-conscious consumers. Online grocery delivery services like Instacart and Amazon Fresh have further intensified the competition, offering convenience and home delivery options. These competitors push Jewel-Osco to continuously innovate and improve its offerings to maintain a strong position in the dynamic grocery industry.

Jewel Osco Money Order Issue

Rated 1.0 out of 5

Ok. Here goes. If you/Jewel and its affiliates are going to print out money orders and honor the money I hand you for said money order, you should refund me if I don’t use or need it.

I recently purchased a $325 money order for a senior living deposit, made out etc. Turns out I didn’t need to because of my disability. When I brought back the money, and receipt, and explained the reason I no longer needed it. DOUG THE MANAGER AT THE JEWEL OSCO LOCATION IN NILES, IL. EXPLAINED THE NO RETURN POLICY. BUT ONLY AFTER BEING EXTREMELY RUDE AND SAYING THINGS LIKE “HOW DO I KNOW YOU DIDN’T PRINT THIS OUT YOURSELF?” “PEOPLE DO THIS ALL THE TIME” “I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE!” “TAKE IT TO YOUR BANK AND CASH IT”. WHEN I TOLD HIM I HAD EVERYTHING SAYING I PURCHASED AT THIS JEWEL AND EXPECTED TO GET MY MONEY BACK. HE SAID “GOOD LUCK”. AS I LEFT I TOLD HIM HOW RUDE HE WAS TO THE ELDERLY AND DIDN’T NEED TO SO, HE HAD THE NERVE TO SAY ” WHY CAUSE YOU DIDN’T GET WHAT YOU WANTED?”

HONESTLY YES. I BELIEVE IF YOU HONORED MY MONEY YOU CAN HONOR IT BACK.

I wasn’t rude back, just shocked. Shocked at the policy. Shocked at how rude Doug was. SHOCKED.

Now I’m stuck with a filled-out money order I cannot use, nor will anyone cash. And why I purchased money order? Disability deposits onto a Mastercard debit card. No bank per se, nor check cashing locations, etc only ATM locations.

And for the record Doug not everyone is a con, crook, or up to no good. You need a reality check on customer service.

I WILL NEVER SHOP AT THAT JEWEL AGAIN.

And you should revise the money order process so that customers are treated right, not like they did something wrong.

Jewel Not Enough Motorized Shopping Carts

I’ve been to the Jewel in Munster, IN 4 times in the past 2 weeks and I had to leave and go to other grocery stores because no handicapped scooters were available. The Jewel only has 3 motorized scooters for the handicapped. I spoke to the manager and he said 1 is out of service. Even if they get all 4 back in service there still aren’t enough. Also, they only have about 8 handicapped parking spaces. This is a very busy, crowded store and they should address the needs of their customers. There are 2 other grocery stores in the area that I’ve been going to after trying to go to the Jewel first but if I can’t get a scooter I go to one of them although I prefer Jewel.

Since When does a grocery store have NO legal tender? - No change?

On Aug. 20, 2023, the Jewel/Osco store in Elburn, IL (store #3347) was open for business, telling all customers that they had NO CHANGE on the premises. Customers were told to either use a credit or debit card. Now a store may be out of milk, coke, or anything else, but being out of money is absolutely ridiculous and nuts. Where did their money go? This is a business with access to a bank, and not everyone has a credit or debit card on them, so who emptied out their CHANGE at this store? Moronic beyond words and disgusting as a business!

I am a frequent shopper at your store on Montrose and Central, store number 1282. There are two employees that go above and beyond, and I want them to be recognized for excellent customer service. The first one is Liz Slaughter, and the second one is Joy. I’m not sure of her last name. Liz is the best and always makes sure that I am taken care of. I am handicapped, and she always makes sure that I am well taken care of. I am so appreciative!

I live in Hoffman Estates, IL and I have a complaint that I would to get an answer to. I am looking at a Jewel ad for 4/19 to 4/25. There is a statement on the first page of this ad that states the following: SELECT ITEMS AND RETAILS ON THIS PAFE ONLY AVAILABLE AT 1151 S. Roselle or 2501 Schaumburg Rd. However nowhere on the first page is anything marked to indicate which items are only available at those stores. This is bait and switch. Shame on Jewel. I thought that Jewel was better than this. I do not have a smartphone to use any kind of AP. I can see that anyone at Jewel does not care about customers who either do not have access to APs or choose not to have access. But I should not be surprised at a store that requires people to buy more than 1 of some products to get a sale price. A lot of senior citizens (and others) do not feel the need to buy more than 1 of item if that is all that they need. If anyone wants to talk to me (probably not), my phone number is. Thank you for letting me let off some steam.
